Channel

What agentic AI means for MSPs and VARs.

Transactional resale is shrinking and outcome-accountable services are rising. A realistic timeline for the IT channel, and what survives.

Agentic AI will not make MSPs and VARs disappear, but it will cull and reshape them. Reselling licenses for a margin is being squeezed now. Distribution loses relevance next, except where it provides credit and logistics. The providers that last will run agent-based work, govern it and prove it, and they will be paid for outcomes rather than effort.

The demand is there, the delivery isn't

MSPs are hearing about AI from every customer. In Kaseya's 2026 State of the MSP survey of more than 1,000 providers, 48% ranked AI and automation as their clients' top need for 2026, ahead of security and backup. Only 13% were generating meaningful revenue from it.

The same survey shows the squeeze on the traditional model. The share of MSPs whose typical customer spends more than $25,000 a year fell to 41%, from 75% the year before, and 71% said acquiring new customers was their top challenge.

Omdia's research points the same way. Seven in ten MSPs say they use agentic AI, but only 10% have deployed it mainly in their service desk or security and compliance operations. Meanwhile their customers are often further ahead.

A realistic timeline

  • 2026 to 2028. License-only resellers are squeezed hard. Hyperscaler marketplaces, agent-driven procurement and vendor-direct renewals strip out "place the order, take the margin" business.
  • 2028 to 2031. Distributors lose relevance except where they provide credit, financing and hardware logistics. Mid-sized VARs consolidate.
  • 2030 onwards. The survivors are outcome-accountable partners running agent estates, governance, security and integration on managed-outcome or gain-share terms.

That timeline is already moving faster in managed IT. Investors are buying MSPs and adding agents now. General Catalyst's Titan, for example, acquired RFA, an MSP serving more than 400 financial services clients, to run agents on its IT support work.

Why the channel does not vanish

Three things keep intermediaries in play.

Agents create more operational work, not less. Someone has to own orchestration, failures, data governance and compliance sign-off. Vendors do not want that liability across thousands of small customers.

Procurement is sticky. Public sector frameworks, financing and consolidated billing keep intermediaries relevant long after the technical case weakens.

Vendors have tried going direct before. Agent-driven sales lowers the cost of a sale. It does not lower the cost of delivery and accountability, which is where mid-market service has always been expensive.

What changes for providers

The shift is from selling access and effort to selling results:

  • From reselling licenses to running processes
  • From billing hours to billing verified outcomes
  • From uptime reports to evidence behind every result
  • From IT operations to business operations

The risk to this view is real. If vendors ship agents that genuinely deploy and support themselves at small-business scale with acceptable liability, the window for providers who have not moved to outcomes shrinks to five to seven years.

Where Agentic MSP sits

We are built for the end state: governed agents running back-office work, a human exception desk, and pricing on verified outcomes. Our view is that the managed IT lane is being consolidated by well-funded buyers, while business process work is still open. That is where we operate. Read more about us.

Common questions.

Will AI replace managed service providers?

Not as a category. Agents create more operational work to govern, not less, and vendors have repeatedly found serving the mid-market directly too costly. What shrinks is transactional resale and effort-based billing.

What should MSPs do about agentic AI?

Move from reselling licenses and billing effort toward owning outcomes: running agent-based processes, governing them and proving the results, with pricing tied to what is delivered.
